Much of what we are able to see of the natural world, both miniscule and immense, is synthetically mediated through technology. This relationship between the natural world and the technological means of imaging it is central to David Mann’s work. His luminous abstract paintings suggest transformative processes normally unseen by the human eye. In Mann's canvases, exploding or contracting cellular forms and deep, mysterious spaces imply hidden natural forces triggering suspenseful moments of genesis or decay. The perceived scale of these phenomena ranges from the cosmic--such as supernovas exploding or massive frothing plasma clouds--to the microscopic domains of cellular mutation or the incipient life of a percolating, primordial ocean. Above all, David Mann’s work is about visual discovery and the very act of seeing. The associations or representations that the viewer may derive remain secondary to the direct experience of the work itself. The paintings are saturated with color and light, as well as mystery and potential. |   | ||||||
