Perforations
June 12 - August 2, 2003

This exhibition examines the work of artists who consciously create voids in their work as an active element. Whether by cutting, tearing, gouging, or burning, the actions are meant to create or imply an alternative space, emphasize absence, or reveal fundamental structural differences. In many pieces the holes describe a process of destruction or elimination, rendering functional forms useless or powerless. In other works the artist’s efforts are constructive and the punctures become a means to literally engage layers of materials and the play of light and shadow. Perforations features paintings, works on paper, sculpture and photography by the following artists: Noriko Ambe, Reed Anderson, Jean Blackburn, Jonathan Callan, Davide Cantoni, John Digby, Heide Fasnacht, Lucio Fontana, Susan Graham, Arturo Herrera, Oliver Herring, Siobhan Liddell, Gordon Matta-Clark, Aric Obrosey, Matt Schwede, Jane South, Jessica Stockholder and Lane Twitchell.
