Tom Leaver
October 14 - November 12, 2005

Tom Leaver has been exhibiting his evocative, near-abstract landscape paintings throughout the United States for over twenty years. Veering in and out of abstraction, his imagery appears to be at once dissolving and emerging, shifting subtly from work to work as well as within each particular piece. Leaver applies the paint to his surfaces--whether wood or canvas--with gloved hands rather than brushes or palette knifes, and at the end of the day disrupts the image by brushing turpentine across the top, allowing the paint to drip and dissolve. Randomness and chance play an important role in the work, and the artist may spend months working on a single painting, until something unexpected "clicks." The result is a multilayered work with scumbling, drips, and subtle layers of color that yields imagery bordering on dissolution.
