Maureen McQuillan's new drawings refer to both the perceptual ambiguities of Op Art, and the biotechnical, virtual and artificial realities which are fast becoming a familiar part of everyday life. While her work evokes an optical complexity akin to micrographic images of natural phenomena, it is actually created by decidedly low-tech means. Her open-ended and repetitive process embeds the white ink in the glossy polymer to produce both sharp and nebulous marks. At times, the mysteriously convergent and divergent lines appear to lie on the surface of the paper, at others they twist and swell into knife-edges or waves of ink that emerge from the blackness of the backgrounds. Blobs and other imperfections are purposefully left on view. These visual "blips" in the seamlessness of the surface serve as indexical reminders of the process of their making. One procedural variation suggests another, and the images flow logically one from another as the process itself remains open to transformation and change. | |||||||
